A little history: Luther McCutchins was from Pembroke. His father died when he was very young, and he was "turned out into the world" to work on farms, as his mother could not take care of him. However he was able to go to school in the winter months and by age 16, qualified to teach school. By working farms in the summer and teaching in the winter, he was able to gain sufficient funds to attend some academies of higher learning … continuing to work the farms in the summer and teach in the winters. In 1841, he bought a farm in New London, married and had 2 children.
McCutchins was for eight years a Captain in the old State militia. After it was reorganized he was appointed General. From 1851-1874 he served as Selectman for the city of New London. In 1874 he ran for Governor of New Hampshire, but lost to Ezekiel A. Straw. After that he continued to serve in many positions for the City of New London, including: Representative to the General Court, Auditor, and Highway Surveyor.
