C. BROOKS SMITH
Charles Brooks Smith
, of Hale County, was born May 26, 1860, at Livingston, Sumter County, Ala; was the son of John Thomas and Cornelia E. (Houston) Smith, and the grandson of Stephen and Sarah A. (Rhodes) Smith and of M.C. and Martha L. Houston. Stephen Smith was of English parentage, being the son of John Smith and his wife, who was a Miss Lancaster from London. He lived in Wayne County, N.C. His wife was the daughter of James Rhodes and Ann Bass, who was the daughter of Dr. Andrew Bass, who came from Wales to N.C. prior to the Revolution. M.C. and Martha L. Houston were residents of Livingston, Ala., and were of Scots Irish descent, their ancestors coming from Scotland to the north of Ireland, whence they emigrated about 1735 to Penn. John T. Smith, of Livingston, Ala., was born near Greensboro, Wayne County, N.C. He was a Confederate soldier from the beginning to the very end of the war.
Charles Brooks Smith
was a Democrat; he was a member of the Democratic Executive Committee of Hale County for about fifteen years, when he resigned and came to Montgomery to accept a clerkship in the Auditor's office, and there served ten years as a member of the State Executive Committee. He served as State Audior, 1911-1915; was chief clerk in the State Treasurer's office, January 1915 to October 2, 1915; and in 1915 he was appointed Insurance Commissioner to head the new department created by act of September 25, 1914. He was a communicant in the Episcopal Church; and unmarried.
