Description
c. 1960 Figural Boys Club of America trophy awarded to Simeon S. Willis, Kentucky's 46th Governor from his daughter's personal collection. Plaque reads "Awarded to Simeon S. Willis by Boys Club of America for long and distinguished service to the cause of helping boys become good citizens".Trophy is 10.5" tall with a 6" square base.
Simeon S. Willis (1879-1965) was the 46th Governor of Kentucky and served from 1943 to 1947 when Earle C. Clements was elected Governor. Willis was the only Republican elected Governor of Kentucky in 40 years spanning 1927-1967. Several of his accomplishments during his term as Governor include -
better mine safety laws
stronger concealed weapons laws
increased funding for black education (when it was still a segregated state)
million surplus at the end of the war and his term
eliminated tolls on 12/13 bridges
expanded programs for dependent children and elderly people
constructed five tuberculosis hospitals
