    BIOGRAPHY OF THE HONORABLE
    DAVID SCHENCK CRATER
    David S. Crater
was born at Clarksburg, Mercer County, New Jersey on
July 19, 1846. For a time he was a pupil in the schools at Long Branch, NJ,
and then studied for a time under private instruction. At a suitable age, after he had left school, he entered the office of “The Monmouth Democrat” at Freehold, NJ, where for a period of three years he was taught the trade of printing. In 1868 he became the clerk of Aaron Ray Throckmorton, the Surrogate of Monmouth County, and remained in that position until the resignation of Throckmorton in 1882. Governor George B. Ludlow appointed Crater to fill the vacant office until the regular election in the fall of that year when he was elected to succeed himself in this office, without opposition, either for the nomination, or the election. He was reelected several times, serving in all more than a quarter of a century in this office.
Crater had studied law with Surrogate Throckmorton, was admitted to the bar as an attorney on November 6, 1879, and as a counselor on June 3, 1886.
He was chosen Treasurer of the Town of Freehold, New Jersey in 1876, and was in office for a long period of time.
In his political affiliations, Crater had always been a strong Democrat and had been heartily in accord with any movement which has had for its object the improvement and welfare of the town of Freehold.
Crater was a member of the Freehold Board of Trade for many years. He is a charter member of the Freehold Fire Department which was established in I872, and he was the organizer of the Firemen's Relief Association of Freehold, and was an active member of that body.
In 1912, Governor Woodrow Wilson (later President of the United States) appointed Crater as Secretary of State of New Jersey, a position he occupied ‘till his death.
By virtue of his descent, he was entitled to membership in the Sons of the Revolution, although it does not appear that he ever joined the organization.
Crater possessed great individuality and strength of character. In his manner, although dignified, he was courteous and affable, and had the power of making one feel thoroughly at ease. His name and talents made him a welcome guest wherever he went and he was highly regarded, not alone because of his intellectual qualities, but on account of his congenial and sympathetic character.
Crater died in Manhattan, New York City, on April 3, 1915 (aged 68), and is buried in Maplewood Cemetery, Freehold, Monmouth County, NJ.
When NJ Gov. Fielder was informed of Crater’s death he said, “
I am shocked to hear the sad news.
Mr. Crater was not only one of the most valuable men in the administration, but was my personal friend.
His loss to the State of New Jersey and Monmouth County will be great.
His political associates and hundreds who knew him admired him.
